How Our Pottery Is Made
Every piece of pottery is handmade using 100% natural clays. No moulds are used in the creation of the pottery. The clay is carefully prepared to ensure the proper moisture content and consistency, and is then moulded into shape using a rotating potter’s wheel. The piece is allowed to dry in the sun until it is ready for the sculptor to hand carve and cut the pattern into the pot. Every piece is hand carved and etched. This detailed work produces a unique and intricate pot every time.
The pottery is then fired in a kiln for about 48 to 72 hours, depending on the colour and style of the pottery desired.
The grey colour of pottery is fired using a traditional wooden kiln. Each piece is completely covered with wood chippings and saw dust. The smoke is prevented from escaping the wooden kiln which turns the colour of the pottery to a deep, rich grey. Grey pottery is fired for three days at temperature of approximately 700-800º C (1292-1472º F).
